My Students

Straight to the point...

Title I, No Money, Small School, Poor County.

I teach at a very small middle school. We have about 200 students that are split up into 4 grade levels. It is difficult to provide for my students with the extremely limited resources I have. I do what I can out of my pocket, but it will never be enough. The students definitely cannot afford anything. This is why I need your help. Each child should have access to a fulfilling and whole education! I'm asking for help in acquiring new instruments for these students.

My Project

How will this clarinet make a difference in my students' learning? Easy. It is another instrument in the hands of a young, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed student. The clarinet is not just an instrument. It is a door, if you will, to a better and wonderful world for a student like the ones I teach with terrible home lives and cultural surroundings. These students see nothing but heartbreak and failure day in and day out. They listen to people telling them they won't make it in the real world. That nothing matters. They will fail because everyone around them has failed. But, there is something they do that gives them hope and wonder.

Music is that thing that gives the hope for a better future.

I have had the pleasure of watching two years of students go from beginners who were at each other's throats to young musicians who can play in a band together as if they have been the best of friends since day one. We learn more than notes and rhythms through music education. We learn about the expressing of emotions without words. We learn to express ourselves and accept others when they do the same. We learn trust and, most importantly, family-like relationships between would-be enemies. Help me continue this work through the simple act of giving a clarinet!
