Winging It: First Grade Feathered Friends Take Flight!
Help me give my students a Lakeshore Birds Specimen Center, measuring worms, slotted spoons, tweezers, tongue depressors, marbles, and bird figurines to investigate bird adaptations and survival.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 1st grade explorers are about to take flight into the fascinating world of birds, and we need your help to make their learning soar! With your generous support, we aim to provide hands-on materials for our bird unit where students will explore the anatomy of birds and how they meet their needs for survival.
Student-led learning is a big must in our classroom.
With these materials, we plan to conduct an investigation about how different birds use their beaks to catch their prey, and how the shape of their beaks affect their survival. Students will be able to test out the various tools to attempt to pick up bird food and take note of their observations and discoveries. The Lakeshore Bird Specimen Center will be the crowning feature, showcasing real nests, a peacock feather, and even an owl skull!
Although our school is located in the Salt Lake Valley and is surrounded by beautiful mountains, many of our students do not have the opportunity to connect with nature that often. Through activities like this one, we hope to bridge the gap between the great outdoors and the wonderful learning that happens in our classroom.
