Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are wonderful: unique, playful, and curious about the world. They make connections to their own lives often, and are finding ways to continually use books and literature to help understand their own identities, and those of people around them.

This project will benefit students because the books will have relatable characters, topics and themes that students can identify with and learn from, as well as having books that explore and explain cultures and situations different from their own exeriences.

Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop researched the impact of students being able to see themselves in the stories they read. Students are more engaged and motivated to learn when they associate with the themes, characters, and cultures. Furthermore, they are exposed to different types of people and stories, that teach skills like perspective taking, problem solving, and understanding different backgrounds we all come from. The purpose of Windows and Mirrors is to expose students both to literature that is relatable where they can see themselves (mirrors) and also expose them to the world outside (windows).

For example, when they read Mango, Abuela and Me, students will get to the part where Mia is helping her grandmother learn English, and will likely relate. "My mom and dad also don't speak English, but I can help them at home because I learn it at school." This is an experience many of my students will understand and have experience with. However, when reading The Proudest Blue, they may have never seen or heard of a hijab before, and the challenges that Faizah, the main character, faces. Reading this story will serve as a window, and help them learn about other cultures which they may otherwise not experience.
