My Project
Literature is meant to provide access for students to see themselves and perspectives different then themselves. In the summer of 2023, I traveled to Amsterdam to study refugee and immigrant education. I was able to go into the schools within Amsterdam to study the methods implemented to assist with the influx of Ukrainian refugees; as well as, adult immigrants and refugees. From this I began researching refugee and immigrant texts within the classroom and utilizing up to date young adult literature in the classroom. If provided with this grant, I would use the money to purchase more texts that focus on the impact of being a refugee or immigrant in the United States. This offers our students a unique perspective to a situation that they are not familiar with. The goal of literature is to create windows and mirrors. We as teachers should be providing texts that allow students to see parts of themselves, but also to glimpse perspectives that are entirely different from their own. My goal is always to increase the windows available for my students.
Gabi, Girl in Pieces will be used as an addition to our refugee and immigrant book club study.
The indigenous voices picture books are used in a unit for students to access indigenous stories utilizing the major literature standards and incorporate research writing.
