Every day, I have the privilege of being able to see two dozen smiling students, eager and ready to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds. After over a year of remote learning, my students have made the switch to hybrid learning. Providing appropriate tools to reach students where they are is more important than ever!
Social-emotional learning, or SEL, is an area of need for my students.
During the pandemic, many students may have felt lonely or frustrated with the many changes going on in the world around them. Addressing and honoring these feelings is a critical step in helping students cope with the challenges of this past year.
My Project
When students grapple with social issues such as loneliness, anxiety, and grief, often a book can be a safe place to turn for comfort. Sometimes, books serve as a window to the outside world, or a mirror, reflecting the feelings of the reader.
As a teacher of young readers, one of my goals is to put diverse books in students' hands to help empower them to rise above adversity.
The books in this project represent characters, both fictional and real, from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Books such as Eyes that Kiss in the Corners and Hair Like Mine encourage pride in one's culture, while books like The What-Ifs and Jabari Jumps address anxiety and being brave in the face of difficulty.
My goal is for these books to resonate with students and help encourage them, even when times get tough. Thank you for supporting the social-emotional needs of my third graders!
