Windows and Mirrors: Building a Diverse Classroom Library

Help me give my students books that they can see themselves reflected in the stories they read, and just as importantly, that they are introduced to perspectives and experiences different from their own.

My Project

It’s essential that every child sees themselves reflected in the books they read, and just as importantly, is exposed to stories that broaden their understanding of others.

Books that support representation go beyond diversity—they affirm the dignity, histories, and voices of people of color and actively challenge stereotypes, bias, and exclusion.

When young students engage with inclusive texts, they develop empathy, critical thinking, and a sense of justice that extends beyond the classroom.

Without access to representative literature, many students may feel unseen or undervalued, while others may miss the opportunity to understand and appreciate the rich diversity of our world. By intentionally including books that highlight all characters from underrepresented voices, we create a learning environment where every child feels respected, empowered, and inspired to be an ally and advocate.

This project will help ensure that our classroom library isn't just a collection of books, but a launchpad for meaningful conversations, deeper understanding, and a future grounded in equity and kindness.
