My Students

The most checked-out books in our school library are from the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series. Before they check these books out, students make a point of opening the books in front of me and flicking through the pages while I watch. Why do you think that is?

The answer is that the books are falling apart.

They may have missing pages. Or, the pages of the story remain stuck together but have become detached from the spine. The kids are anxious to show me the books before they check them out, so that they are not held liable for the state of the books when they return them.

My Project

Why are the Wimpy Kid books in such bad condition? 1) They are several years old. 2) They are far and away the most popular books in the library, checked out by munchkins and teenagers alike. If you could buy one book series to boost literacy among our students, this is the series to get. A word or two about our students, and just why you might consider helping them. Over 80% are first generation American. Their parents are immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America who work in low-paying jobs in the tourism industry. (Our school is in South Florida.) They are not exposed to a lot of books at home.

In addition to twenty replacement 'Wimpy Kid' books, this project includes twelve copies of the brand new 'Wimpy Kid' novel, 'Old School', which comes out in November.

This is the hottest book on the market right now! My kids would love to read this book! Please consider helping us with this project. These titles will be checked out by hundreds of children. They will really help promote literacy in our school.
