Help me give my students the experience of seeing history come alive by helping with the cost of transportation to Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg!
My 5th-grade students from Wilmington, North Carolina attend an inquiry-based school that gives children the opportunity to explore and experience integrated content in hands-on and personally meaningful ways.
My students learn through reading, exploring the outdoors, taking field trips, collaborating and effectively communicating with one another and problem-solving.
At our school, we believe that all children have an innate sense of wonder. They learn best and thrive in an environment where they feel nurtured and empowered to take responsibility for their own learning.
My Project
We are planning to take our students to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown for three days and two nights. This will require a five-six hour drive from our school. For a long trip such as this, it would be both impossible and impractical to ask our parents to drive cars for this length of time. The only way this trip will be successful is by renting a charter bus to hold our students and our parent chaperones. The cost of this, however, would add to the total cost each student is expected to pay. A higher cost will mean a greater financial burden for many fifth grade families.
The ultimate goal of taking this trip is to directly connect the experience to our social studies curriculum in the classroom before we go and more importantly, after we return.
Learning about Colonial history in the classroom can never replace the experiences they will get first hand by taking this trip and it allows them to make more meaningful connections to our curriculum. This project will impact our fifth-grade students in many ways and we're eager to provide an experience for them that they may not have otherwise. It's also an opportunity to create personally meaningful connections to our curriculum. When we return, we will directly use this experience to continue teaching about colonial history and the American Revolution.
For many of our students, this will be their first experience away from home for more than a day, staying in a hotel and riding a bus with their classmates. We want to make this a fun and memorable trip for everyone without the cost of being a struggle for any of our families.
Without the funding for this project, the total cost for each family will be much higher and for some, this
