Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a talented and curious, yet underachieving group or inner-city students at a school with 85% poverty rate. My students struggle with balancing their need for academic improvement with the struggles they face daily on the streets and at home. These struggles have often resulted in an apathy towards their academic aims.

My students are not engaged. They are very intelligent, yet because my school focuses on the students who are developmentally behind, my students are often overlooked when it comes to providing the challenging material that will engage them and prepare them better for their academic futures at college. This has resulted in an apathy towards further education as they feel that they have "got it already."

“You never know what is enough unless you know more than enough.” - William Blake My students need William Blake in their lives. This Romantic poet/artist will provide them the creative format and thought provoking content to challenge their intellect. Blake's illustrative work will inspire my students while at the same time creating better readers through the exploration of his beguilingly simple, yet complex words.

Help my students by providing them with inspiring text that will improve their cultural awareness as well as prepare them for college. Blake is a critical source of inspiration to any young writer in his championing of idiosyncratic thoughts and images. Additionally students will benefit from your support of this project by learning to be better readers and developing analytical skills. Finally, this project will help to fight the apathy that prevents so many fine students from continuing their education at college.
