My Students
The acquisition of language, and being able to use it, is often taken for granted by those of us with normal hearing. All my students have language delays due to varying degrees of hearing loss.
I have a self-contained class for hearing impaired students in a public school.
I have multiple grade levels ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade this year. My students are mainstreamed in regular classes for various subjects and/or related arts activities. All of my students use a cochlear implant and/or hearing aids to help them hear and acquire language. Their language delays range from a year to several years when compared to their hearing peers. My students are fun, energetic, enthusiastic and curious learners. Because of their lack of hearing, they are very tactile and visual learners.
My Project
My students need a variety of high interest, quality reading material to further their language development. This project a variety of reading materials including The Day the Crayons Quit, Amelia Bedelia, Fancy Nancy, Splat the Cat and the Hotshot, Splat the Cat Dreams Big, Mr. Wuffles!, The Everything Kids' Basketball Book, and Pete the Cat.
The materials we are requesting will help my students in their acquisition of language. By having a variety of reading materials available in our own classroom library the students will have easy access to the tools they need to become lifelong readers. Most importantly, they can use these new resources to build vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking skills and writing!
Regardless of your job in life, communication is essential.
It is even more crucial to develop these essential skills for children with language delays. These materials will help provide quality reading materials, as well as an engaging, hands-on approach, to help them do just that!
