One of the most rewarding things about being a teacher is getting to know the children that you teach: discovering their favorite books, what they enjoy doing for recreation and how they feel about themselves. It is also teaching children to respect other people's differences. As you might imagine, there are many differences among third graders, one of the most important being a child's reading level.
This year, my school is changing the way children are grouped. As a result, I will have students reading on a kindergarten level in the same room as children reading on grade level or even above grade level. It is very important that I use research based teaching strategies to make sure I provide the best education I possibly can to each of my students.
One strategy that I have used successfully in the past is buddy reading. In buddy reading, two students pair up or I assign buddies and they read a text together. Professional books and workshops tout the benefits of peer or buddy reading. Research shows significant gains for students who engage in buddy reading on a regular basis.
Due to the extremely wide range of reading levels in my classroom this year, buddy reading will present a new challenge; however, it is much too good of a reading strategy to take it out of my program. Instead, I have been trying to think of ways to make it work again this year. In doing so, I discovered a brand new program that offers a solution to my problem.
This new program uses a set of books that presents two reading levels on alternating pages. My struggling readers could read with students who are on grade level. Essentially, everybody wins!
I know that you want to make a difference in the lives of children or you wouldn't be reading this proposal. Please believe that your gift would make that difference for my students this year. Everybody will be winners, including you!
