Will the real Cinderella please step up! There are many versions of Cinderella in the world and we want to find out who she is. You can help us do that! I am a teacher at Scott Joplin Elementary in Chicago, Illinois. 82% of our students receive free lunch. I teach an accelerated class of amazing 2nd graders. They have overcome many obstacles to get where they are today. I started with them at the beginning of first grade and I am looking to fund a project to culminate our 2 years together. We started out learning sounds as timid first graders and now we are all reading on a 3rd - 4th grade level as outspoken 2nd graders. I really want to reward their hard work with a culminating theme unit on Cinderella so that we can put all of our new knowledge to work! Our project will consist of reading Cinderella stories from around the world. We will explore many different regions, from the United States to Mexico, Africa, China, and even Antarctica! After comparing these stories to the culture they come from, we will compare the stories to one another. How does Cinderella dress? Does she loose a glass slipper as we all think? Or is is a glass flipper? Or is it made of gold? Perhaps she isn't even a girl, as in Prince Cinders or The Irish Cinderlad. We will plot each of the stories on a map to help us with our knowledge of places. How does the culture of each story determine the clothes she wears and what she loses? We will find out! After reading the various Cinderella tales, my students will create their own Cinderella stories focusing on a certain type of shoe...perhaps baseball cleats, ballet shoes, or even flip flops. To culminate our Cinderella Project, we want to put on a play. For our play, we will need bulletin board paper to make backdrops and various masks and materials to make the costumes. Our play will be performed for other primary students at our school and to parents and administration. The play is entitled Cinderella Around the World and it incorporates many of the ideas we will read about in our literature study. The majority of our project focuses on the many versions of Cinderella. We will need many different versions of Cinderella for class discussion and read aloud, group book studies, and take home books so that we can involve our families. We would greatly appreciate any help you can give us. My students give their all everyday and they have wonderful dreams for the future. Please help one of my dreams come true. Thank you!
