Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade at high performing school in a lower socioeconomic community, but did not get any of the high performing students in my class this year. In fact, only a handful of them came to my class reading on grade level. Our principal has expressed a concern that if students are only reading from the Reading text, which is written below grade level, they will not learn to read on grade level. However, being a high performing school, we have limited funds and I do not have access to alternative funds or resources. I would be grateful to have a set of 30 grade-level children's chapter books so my students can be exposed to and learn to read grade level material. I would hope we can read them simply to experience the joy of reading, which will give children a greater appreciation and love for reading. We will also discuss the books together, but there will be no tests and no grades in order to make reading them a positive experience they look forward to. Students will be able to take the books home to read portions to family members and will be encouraged to start building a home library. A set of the following literature book would be greatly appreciated! "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" by Judy Bloom Most of my students are not reading chapter books on their own. Having the opportunity to read the books together in class will hopefully give them enough motivation and confidence to do so. Thank you for your time!
