Kids are natural runners, but whether they're accompanying you on a run or participating in a school program, they require special care at every step of their development. From the right shoes, to the right distance, ensuring kids will remain lifelong runners means providing support, encouragement and counsel.
Last year I created a Running Club in the morning for our elementary students.
We meet twice a week and usually train for 1 mile races that occur twice a year district-wide. The first year I had 20 students but this year I have 85 and actually had to close the club for the year.
I am looking for strength and training activities to add that will increase their leg strength and help improve their overall running times.
By offering a variety of activities on these mornings I hope to create a lifelong passion for running.
With these materials, I will be able to add in circuit training as part of our warm up before we go out for our morning runs.
By building up the intensity of morning practices the runners will be able to compete at a higher level.
The medicine balls will help them build up leg strength by adding in squats and lunges while carrying a weighted object. The ab rollers will help with their core strength which will help them with their running form as well as in all areas of fitness. The individual weights are expensive but they can be used in interval training stations and take turns on who will carry them during the morning runs. This will drastically increase the difficulty of the run at practice which will only make the competitive runs easier.
