My Students
I am privileged enough to teach at a public, Title 1 Impact school in Savannah-Chatham County. The students who receive free or reduced lunch in my school make up 90% of the student population. Despite the prominent hardships encountered by my students, they are bright, loving, and eager to learn.
The majority of my students face things on a daily basis that most adults can't fathom.
We have many students that have come from other countries and are English Language Learners. It can be very difficult for all of our students to learn when they are continuously distracted by hardships beyond their control. It is very important to my fellow colleagues and I to nurture these students and help them develop a love for learning. This is our attempt to improve our world by improving the world of our students.
My Project
Reading is the very cornerstone of civilization. If you can read, you can learn anything! This is what makes the Reading Lab so important for students as an extra opportunity during the week to enhance their reading fluency and comprehension.
If the students in my classroom are not reading on grade level, it will directly impact their learning in every other subject.
The Reading Lab offers students the opportunity to generate positive associations with reading that can be transferred to every other subject in their regular classroom. My goal is to instill a love for reading in my students so that they are able to learn at high levels.
In my group rotations, students have the opportunity to engage with technology that is suited to their individual needs. I have requested headphones in this project so that the students can focus on the reading program during their rotations. I have also requested chart paper to help with solidifying reading concepts through the use of anchor charts. The time tracker and alphabet stamps will both work to set my students up for success in their groups and keep them learning in the right direction. I will be able to use the label maker and drawer cart to make sure all 600+ children have organized material and resources!
