My Project

We are fortunate enough to have a beautiful raised garden in our outdoor lab. Unfortunately, the organization that supported us in our early efforts is now defunct. Last year's third graders already harvested some late-season offerings in order to collect seeds, but other supplies are not as recyclable.

We are in need of dirt to replenish our containers and growing implements to help our vegetables grow even higher this year.

We have twelve small raised gardens, four boxed gardens in our grass, and a forty by fifty square foot watermelon and pumpkin patch carved out of sod. We have seeds to grow multiple tomatoes, multiple peppers, cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, multiple herbs, carrots, turnips, radishes, beets, pole and bush beans, and tomatillos. The dirt in all of our gardens is both too low and depleted of nutrients. Our raised and boxed gardens are also relatively small, so we plan to grow our vegetables up to take advantage of as much vertical space as we can. We have begun an eight-by sixteen-square-foot compost pit for our food scraps, ungraded papers, and paper towels, but that dirt is still one to two years away. The eventual goal is to be mostly self-sustaining, but we need your help to grow there.

Although all five third grade classes will participate in planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting; the weekly maintenance and initial early spring planting will be completed by the third grade gardening club after school on Tuesdays. I will admit to sneaking my class out for some extra gardening on days when it's too beautiful to spend it all inside. Thank you for your consideration of our gardening project!
