Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

GWES is located on the southeast side of Iowa City, IA, and is a part of the community school district. Our students ("Wildcats") range in grades K through 6 and represent countries from around the globe. They are from Mexico, Tanzania, China and everywhere in between. Just under 75% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our students practice the "Wildcat Way" by being safe, responsible and kind and our staff aims to make their building a place where all are welcome in the face of socio-economic status, language proficiency, ability, gender identity, race, family make-up and more.

One of the ways staff aim to do this is by providing a designated space for students to process their emotions and improving their social-emotional behavioral health skills during challenging times. The "Wildcat Den" is that space and we need all of the help we can get to furnish and decorate it. Thank you in advance for supporting our Wildcats.

My Project

The "Wildcat Den" is a vision of Grant Wood's PBIS team as a space that allows us to support students in acknowledging and processing big emotions because as educators, administrators and mental health providers, we know that a student will struggle to learn their fractions or grammar if their unmet social-emotional needs are not addressed first. This will be increasingly important as our students and staff regroup after last school year which presented numerous challenges for all throughout.

The "Wildcat Den" will be made up of comfortable seating that adapts to students' varying sensory needs such as lower lighting, fidget toys made up of a multitude of textures, seating that promotes movement, calming music, and meditative/mindfulness and grounding exercises.

The items in our cart all lend themselves to helping students process their emotions, reset, and feel able to return to learning in their classrooms, ultimately limiting students' time out of the classroom.

To turn the Wildcat Den vision into a reality, we need all of the help we can get. Thank you in advance for supporting our Wildcats!
