I teach at an AMAZING school with AMAZING students! My classroom is a level 2 special education class, and my students are working to earn an applied studies diploma. They are learning the job and life skills that they will need to be successful in the future. To work on these skills we have implemented a student-run coffee cart and potato bar for the staff. My students and students in the other four level 2 classrooms work to run both of these food services. We run the coffee cart weekly for staff and we do the potato bar at the end of each month. The students are learning valuable job skills that will benefit them in the future after high school. They are working on preparing food, taking orders, organizing materials and orders, counting money, and social skills for customer service. It is all about taking what they have learned in the classroom and applying it to their jobs. The money that we earn from the coffee cart and potato bar helps us take the students on meaningful community outings, like going to the grocery store, restaurants, bowling, IKEA, the mall, and places that have job opportunities for the students in the future like Goodwill and the SPCA. Our goal is to give our students the most tools we can for their future after school so that they can gain meaningful employment and live as independently as they possibly can. We need your help!
