Wild Readers Don't Need Naps! They Need Leveled Books!

My students need leveled books (books specific to each child's reading level) for daily guided reading, which will enable them to reach their full reading potential.

My Students

In my kindergarten classroom, students are not only learning to read, but also learning the vital importance of making personal connections to the text. By obtaining leveled readers, I can provide my students with the necessary resources to enable them to achieve their wildest dreams!

My students cannot be summed up in one small paragraph.

They are so much more! Drawing from the book The Help, my students are kind, special and important. They are diverse with a mixture of Caucasian, Spanish, Asian and African American. They represent a myriad of learning levels ranging from low, middle to high. They demonstrate every day how even a 5 year old can overcome strong adversities and still shine with hope when learning occurs. There are moments in my classroom when I am simply amazed, amazed by how one student displays strong courage, amazed by how ALL students at some point have demonstrated compassion and love toward each other, even in moments of conflict. Our class is a true collaborative team. We are fortunate in that our school is a positive learning environment for all grade levels. Even during times of challenge, teachers and staff form a tight bond to ensure that all students are given the best learning experiences.

My Project

It is my strong desire to obtain leveled readers for my classroom, which I will use mainly during Guided Reading lessons and also in conferring with my students. Leveled readers are books that are written in a way that are appropriate for each child's reading level. With this only being my second year of teaching, I have not yet established a good classroom set of leveled readers. This school year specifically, the need for leveled readers has been increasingly apparent because we began the year with one child reading on a second grade level while others were barely reading a pre-A level. It is imperative that my classroom receives these leveled books so that I am able to guide reading instruction with chosen books that are easily tailored for various levels. During my Guided Reading lessons with students, I not only work with them on basic reading skills but I also work with them on learning how to use reading strategies that will enable them to become future strong readers.

By making the decision to donate to my project, you will be enabling my precious students, who are tomorrow's future leaders, to be given stronger reading guidance and support, which are crucial to their long term reading success!

After all, how can a child begin to "read to learn" when they have not been provided with a strong foundation of "learning to read"? Your donation is a direct impact on tomorrow's future leaders!
