Anything with wheels and little guys just go together! My classroom is a special group of children that need additional support in Kindergarten. And, it is boy heavy. Most of these little ones come from low-income families that struggle to make ends meet and many are English Language Learners.
They love to work with cars and trains, making elaborate road and track way with blocks. They add animals and trees and make signs of all kinds. This rich play is exactly what they need. It offers opportunities for social interaction and learning how to work and play with others in an acceptable way. Language develops quickly though these social interactions. Working with blocks provides eye-hand coordination and some basic math skills. Sign making supports emergent writing. Isn't it amazing that play can support a learning child in so many ways?!
We have a few pieces of Brio train that is used daily but is not enough for more than one or two children to play and I would like to add to it with more track and train pieces. A larger set with a complete train will allow more children to participate in more complex, cooperative and creative play each day.
All my children will benefit from this rich play and many more will also benefit in the years to come because this is such a sturdy, quality train.
