Being a child can be tough. Being a child growing up with absentee parents and little money can be excruciating. As a teacher, we have no control over what happens to our children when they leave us. School should be a place of fun and exploration in a safe space!
My students are first graders from inner-city single-parent homes.
They do not come to school with the common skills you would expect. They have little or no prior knowledge of things you and I would take for granted.
I want my classroom to be exciting and help catch students up on experiences I would provide for my own children.
My project will help these inner-city children learn about different animal life cycles. We are lucky to have a saltwater aquarium in our classroom. These are amazing for the students, but costly. So I hope to use some of these supplies to keep our tank running smoothly.
The entire second semester of first grade is studying birds and all about them.
I would love to be able to have the children watch chicken eggs hatch right in front of their eyes.
This experience will stay with them forever.
I also am teaching them about gardening. We have a school garden and I want to help keep it natural by using praying mantises as pest control.
