This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We begin whole group with some kind of music and movement for several minutes. We greet each other and go through a number of routines; how many friends are here, days in school, calendar, weather, etc. Our district expects students to sit, listen and respond to a text.
My students come from disadvantaged homes and families.
Most are receiving free/reduced breakfast and lunch. Uniforms are required. Many students run in the door, eager to share something with me. They want to be heard and I try to help each one find their voice.
My Project
These stools will be used at small group tables for reading groups and interventions. Kids get antsy when they are learning something new and when they are unsure of themselves. I want all of my students to be readers when they leave my class! This goal requires many hours of learning letters, sounds, and words. I want each child to be able to relax and learn in a way that sets them up for success. I know that they cannot be still, so I believe that these stools will help all of my students be successful.
Movement and exercise are incorporated daily into my classroom, but most children still need to move more.
Recess is 20 minutes and research clearly indicates that this is not enough. In addition to what I'm already doing, these stools will help my kids to be able to wiggle and to focus on learning.
