This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a proud teacher of 16 first graders. My students comes into the classroom with a smile every day, even though they are faced with many challenges. My school is a Title I school with breakfast served in the classroom every morning and a 100% free and reduced-price lunch program in place. We have a high ELL population and are a low income school. There is a high population of students who come to our school without living accommodations and families that have no parents or a parent in jail.
The drive my students have to achieve and reach for their dreams is inspiring.
They are eager to share ideas, work with their peers, and persevere through some of the hardest times. They are my reason for smiling and seeing life in a new light.
My Project
Many of my students this year are struggling with keeping focused during learning time. Some of them have sensory issues, some with problems focusing due to the peers around them, some because of their fine motor skills, or some can't focus because they are unregulated by something that happened at home. How can I help keep them focused?
Flexible Seating is an option for empowering my students to have choice in their learning and find where they can go in the classroom to focus and do their best!
I have seen it work! My sensory students love the cushions I have borrowed from other teachers because of the ridges and being able to wiggle. I have three bucket seats next to my classroom window that are always occupied. Also, students choose clipboards and sit around the room.
My goal is to have a different type of seating choice at each team. One team with yoga balls, one that is a table dropped down and students sitting on pillows, another with wiggle cushions, and the fourth team with regular chairs that have desk bands at the bottom. My students deserve to have the best learning environment possible!
