Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district in the South Bronx. My class is filled with vibrant, eager learners who require a variety of ways to learn. About seventy-five percent of my students are performing below grade level. Many of my students live in shelters, receive out-of-classroom services for speech, reading, and math, and are English language learners or have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
My students face many challenges each day and deserve nothing short of the best to help them reach their full potential and beyond.
For many of them, I am the only comfort, security, and positive source in their life. I want to make my students feel welcomed, appreciated, loved, and know that they can do anything they put their minds to!
My Project
With my students returning to in-person school this year, I want to take into account the need for movement for some of them. Most of my students have been learning remotely this past school year. Many of them will have to get accustomed to being in a classroom setting and sitting in a chair for a few hours a day.
They are used to wiggling all around their homes and not sitting in a chair all day.
These flexible seating options will help them get their wiggles out while learning how to be in a classroom setting. They can move around and have a choice of seating, but still learn at the same time!
This will help them remain focused longer and perform better in class. By giving them these options students can learn to self-regulate and focus on school when necessary. These are amazing for the learning environment and a win-win situation for all!
