Wiggle Worms No More!

My students need a way to work comfortably in the classroom. By having flexible seating, students will be able to choose what type of seating works best for them.

My Students

I am a fourth grade teacher in Palm Bay, FL. It is a Title 1 school and about 73% of our students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of my students come from a low income family, so it's hard to even bring in school supplies.

I would like to create a classroom that is inviting and comfortable for all students.

Many of my students have IEPs for having trouble focusing and sitting still which makes it hard for them to finish their work. It is proven that by having different seating options, students are better able to focus. With flexible seating, I will be able to give students the option of completing their work in a manner that is most comfortable to them. I believe this will not only help the student focus, but will also produce higher level of work from the student.

My Project

Most of my students are "wiggle worms". They have the hardest time sitting still. Their legs are always kicking something, they're sitting on their feet, and they're constantly shifting because they are uncomfortable. I wanted to find a way to help these students better focus, and I came across some articles on flexible seating. By providing different types of seating options, students were able to pick what works for them. Teachers saw a change in not only the students, but in the work they produced.

I would love to be able to do this for my students.

My vision is to create a classroom that not only fits the needs of my students, but is warm,welcoming, and a place they want to come and learn everyday. These supplies will allow me to create a room with flexible seating for students. Students will be able to work in a way that's comfortable for them and help with socializing. They will be able to choose a regular chair, a stool, a yoga ball, on their knees at a low table, in a comfy bean bag, sitting on a pad with a clipboard, or even standing at a table! They will love it!
