As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am try to keep things simple and provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control the things that they see and hear during the school day!
My Project
Sitting still as an adult for long periods of time, in a hard plastic chair, feels like torture. Imagine being 4, 5, or 6 years old and being asked to sit for up to 5 hours a day in a hard, plastic chair. My students need the opportunity to move and wiggle!
My class is a group of 21 smart, independent, and creative students who love to learn and absorb new things.
Many of my students are tactile learners and need to move around as they work. They are not use to sitting still, listening and working all day, they need to wiggle and move in order to stay on task. Through my journey in education I have found that all kids need different things in order to learn to the best of their ability, especially at such a young age. I am requesting 2 Hokki stools for my students. These stools have been proven to help students stay on task while being allowed to "wiggle" at the same time. These stools would be such a great addition to our classroom where we are constantly trying to grow! When a child "fidgets" it takes the focus out of learning and puts the focus instead on whatever they can get their hands on. With these stools that wiggle, it will allow the children to move and learn at the same time!
Donations to this project will help my children learn in a way that best suits them. When a child is struggling to stay on task and focus, due to having the "wiggles", they can use the Hokki seat and be successful!
