This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a classroom full of happy, eager to learn, curious, sweet first graders whom I like to call my “First Grade Scholars”. They are so loving and peaceful. They like to laugh, play, and have fun while learning. They are learning how to become problem solvers and they are learning to adapt to our new way of interacting with people due to the current pandemic. Our school is considered a low-income school where 63% of students receive free or reduced meals. Sadly, many of the students in our district are living in generational poverty, and I know that a good educational foundation will give them a chance to become productive citizens. I have implemented Financial Literacy lessons to help teach them many lifelong skills. I would now like to offer them different seating options during our learning.
My Project
Since the beginning of this year’s pandemic, my sweet students are not getting as much movement around the room as they are used to. I truly believe that some children need to be able to move and wiggle while they are learning. That’s why I have decided to give them flexible seating options. Different seating options will bring excitement to my students while we learn. We have been forced to make many changes this year. I have been adding Financial Literacy to our curriculum. It has become part of our day to day lessons in math and literacy. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will allow me to purchase materials for our economics lessons. Using the stools instead of chairs at their desks will allow them to move while remaining in their space. The Nugget couch will be a comfortable option. Students will be able to take the floor seats to the quiet areas while still remaining 6 feet apart. The cushions will be helpful for students that need extra movement and sensory stimulation while learning at their seats and at our small group table. With social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitizing we will continue to make our learning fun and now in a comfortable way. Unfortunately, students will need to remain at their desks for most of their day, so let's get them comfortable and give them options!
