Wiggle While We Work

Help me give my students items to aid them in staying focused in class. These active learning seats and fidgets are quiet and not disruptive to other students. Variety is there for them to find what works best.

My Students

My 3rd grade classroom is a busy place. We start our day with reading followed by language arts, social studies, and social emotional learning. Our afternoons are full with math and science. We end the day our pull out classes (PE, library, health, music, and art).

Students often need an outlet for extra energy.

We ask them to work hard for long periods of time. Often this work is done at their desk, but we move around whenever possible. Multi-tasking is very common for adults and I see more and more children that are fidgeting with something as they think and work. Perhaps this is their own version of multi-tasking that they've seen in grown ups around them. Some are folding paper, some are drawing, others are simply twirling a pencil.

My Project

While not all students need a fidget, I have seen an increase in kids that need to wiggle while they work. These materials will be made available for them to choose to use, or I will suggest a student use one. I've asked for a variety of different fidgets so that all wiggle needs can be met.

These fidgets will be used during any lesson throughout the day.

The items requested (key chains, marble mesh fidgets, pencil toppers, etc) are all quiet to use. This means that if a child needs one, she/he is able to do so and not disrupt classmates. These are items that would replace some wiggling I currently see, like tapping pencils on desks or water bottles, which can be quite noisy and distracting.

If this grant is fulfilled, I anticipate a big difference in how my students this year will be able to attend to and complete their lessons and assignments. There will be less requests to, "Please stop tapping your pencil," from both their classmates and myself.
