This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 5th grade students attend the biggest elementary school in Utah with over 1,000 students from Pre-K to 6th grade. All five of the 5th grade classrooms are in portables behind the school, as well as three 6th grade classrooms and one 2nd grade classroom since our school is so large! 70% of these students qualify for free or reduced lunch. However, these students have goals and want to achieve greatness, but lack the tools that are necessary. They want to learn and understand. They want to grow and ask questions. I want to help provide them with these tools so they can achieve their potential.

My Project

My students need flexible seating options. The chairs they sit on all day are not comfortable and it's hard to sit still or focus on school when you are not comfortable! I had first hand experience when I had an all day training while sitting on these chairs. I was moving around, sitting backwards, and laying on the ground every chance I got and I'm an adult! I know my students will benefit from being able to sit on a variety of seating options that can be tailored to their needs. Studies show that when students are allowed to move and wiggle, their minds are able to focus so much better! The flexible seating options I have requested include yoga balls and stands so they don't roll away, lap trays for sitting on the ground, wiggle seats for those hard chairs, and stress balls to feed students' sensory needs.
