Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school has students from Pre-K through sixth grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many students in my class have accommodations to help meet their diverse learning needs.
I would love to accommodate the diverse needs of my students and to provide them with a flexible learning environment where they can move around the room, choose a comfortable seating option, and refocus their attention.
Our classrooms mostly follow an inclusion model, which means we have general education students, special education, and students with multiple learning needs in the same seating environment. I want to provide a warm and engaging classroom environment where students can move freely and go to the "station" that fits their need at the moment. That might be a carpet on the floor, use alternative seating at their desks, a cozy reading nook to study, or a comfy writing center to finish an assignment.
My students are hard working 10 year olds that deserve the opportunity to learn. They are more productive when given the opportunity to choose a seating option to meet their diverse physical and learning needs.
My Project
Over the years, I have seen students being creative and create flexible seating options for themselves. They move back their chairs and knelt at their desks, get clipboards and sit on the rug, and the teacher's nightmare - rock their chairs back and forth!
Just like adults, children need to be given the option to sit comfortably while learning, to meet their diverse learning styles and needs.
Instead of constantly asking my students to sit appropriately, or safely in class, I'd to provide them with an alternative. I'd like to validate the students' needs to move about and choose their learning style.
I'm requesting some flex-space balance ball seats and a variety of wobble cushions. These will provide my students with multiple seating options while working independently, and collaboratively. Students can meet their diverse needs by using the balance ball instead of a chair at their desk, place a wobble cushion on their existing chairs, or use a cushion to sit on the floor. The multiple seating options will provide students the opportunity to use this seating to meet their own learning needs and styles.
Research shows that children learn in different ways. Some students have learning challenges or attention deficiencies, and providing them with the opportunity to use flexible seating options could help them refocus their attention. I'd like to validate the students' needs to move about and choose their learning style.
We all have different needs and learning styles. Let's support our students and build a strong foundation for their learning.
