Wiggle, Squeeze, & Move: Establishing a Sensory Friendly Therapy Space

My Project

These tools and materials will help my students get the additional sensory support they need to access and participate in their education. In occupational therapy, my students work on self-regulation, sensory processing, handwriting, and functional skills. The goal of this project is to provide the tools that will assist in my student's self-regulation and to trial what tools work for each individual student's strength, interest, and need. Every student is unique in their own way and these tools and materials will help my students to have autonomy in choosing the tools that work best for them. Not only will this new sensory space provide assistance to my occupational therapy students, it will also provide a calm space for all students in the school to come when needing a break to provide a little reset during the day.

All students deserve to have the resources they need to become the best that they can be.

Some students require extra input during school activities to assist with their attention and sensory regulation. My students will be able to use alternative seating for added sensory and gross motor needs, such as sitting on the ground and being able to move around and wiggle. This will allow them to use more parts of their bodies and minds during tasks. The use of subtle fidgets, such as calming tactile stickers and bands for chairs, will allow students to be in their classrooms with their peers.

These tools are essential in allowing my students to build their occupational therapy 'toolbox' in being able to determine 'what works for me?' and be able to be the best students they can be. I know my students will love to have a calm and safe space in school. Thank you!
