This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students I work with are unique and wonderful! They all have had some hiccups with learning to read, so they come to my workspace. Many are children with lots of energy who learn best when they can wiggle a bit.
These cushions will provide them the opportunity to remain seated, engage in the lesson, and complete their work all while wiggling!
They will not bother other students when learning.
The pillow is for flexible seating for reading-which we do a lot of!
When I asked my student last year what type of seating they prefer, they said bean bag chairs-but those are hard to wash and are not a great choice for school. This pillow was a close choice and it has a cover that can be washed-yay!
When asked what students do to help them learn, they often say that they choose flexible seating. The choice is not the same each day. Many of my students are learning to extend their attention spans. Flexible seating gives them self-efficacy because they can choose what works for them, which in turn increases engagement in the task and motivation to read. I am posting two projects devoted to providing more seating choices to my reading students. These would be of great benefit to my students' success as independent learners.
