Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very active, but they have only one recess each day with all the hours required for math and reading instruction. Balance disks would help play to the strengths of their high activity levels while enriching the learning time.

My school is in a predominantly Hispanic part of town.

They are wonderful kids who want to work hard and parents want them to have access to so many of the wonderful opportunities which school provides. They are full of energy and enthusiasm which I don't want to discourage! The school is a wonderful place for the kids to come and feel safe while simultaneously trying new things and taking the risks associated with learning new skills!

My Project

My goal is that eventually I will have enough balance disks for all of my students so that if they need them, they will have access to them. If they do not need them, they will sit in the child's desk. If they do need them, they will discreetly keep them at their sides to carry with them from one classroom to another as they move throughout the day. One student might use this disk to be able to sit still and quietly in music and then use it to be able to focus more on his book during our quiet reading time. Another student may only need it when they come and sit at the carpet. Ultimately, I want access to these tools to be available to each of these students throughout the day so that if they have a "wiggle day," they are able to manage it even if they do not normally need this sort of accommodation.

This project will help my students see that with the right tools, they can be successful.

Sometimes, the right tools are glasses. Sometimes, the right tools are balance balls. Furthermore, this will provide opportunities for deeper learning to some of my students than they have ever been (or perhaps felt like they were) capable of before. It is also an opportunity to give students responsibility of their own management which is a vital life skill.
