This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students who come into my resource room classroom have a range of disabilities. Some of them have learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, and some have other health impairment. The students come from low socioeconomic homes.

A typical student in my class comes from a single-parent home.

A typical student's reading skills are 1-2 years behind. 100% of my first through second grade students read at a kindergarten level. 60% of my third grade students read at a first grade level. Our classroom is a warm, nurturing, and colorful setting, with a SMART board, a long white board, seven student desks, a kidney table, and a student carpet. My students try to be persistent in learning the new content, but many of them are highly distractible.

My Project

In the resource room, several students require re-direction during instructional time. One of the items that would be extremely beneficial is a visual schedule and visual behavior reminder system.

This visual schedule would be a system that would give students a quick non verbal cue as to what is expected of them instead of me stopping instruction to verbally re-direct them to be on task.

Other items such as fidget materials would be helpful in the event that students would need structured mini-breaks and use these quiet gadgets. These materials would be taught to students as to how to use them and when they are to be used.
