My students need the opportunity for movement and alternative seating. Wobble chairs and Balance balls are extensions of wiggle seats that have been used over the years to enable students to be more successful.
I am looking forward to my new class of fourth graders this year. As we start the year, their former teachers have given me a colorful picture of personalities, learning styles and needs of the the upcoming students. Most striking is their enthusiasm for learning and working together in groups. Working together, these students support each other as they move from different learning sites to cooperative groups. Every one of my new learning friends has different needs, but the most common profile of my students is that they are energetic!
With a large special education population, our school and my colleagues work to improve the learning environment for every student to ensure success.
Each of my new learning friends deserves a classroom environment that best accommodates their individual learning style and needs. My students need lots of movement breaks and flexible seating arrangements to better participate in learning. As I look at the class as a whole, I have to anticipate needs of all my students, but most especially those with special needs. Every year it is a challenge. Different learning strategies, groupings and alternative seating has made our classrooms more conducive to learning for all.
My Project
Many of my students have difficulty focusing and making choices to make the most of their learning. The traditional seating arrangements hinder their ability to move and find their physical comfortable learning position. I have made my room as learner friendly as possible with the resources available, but specialized seating is essential to students with special needs. I have chosen some alternative seating options. Flex Space Wobble Chairs, as well as Ball chairs will be available for students to have seating choices when working on assignments that require both stamina and concentration. These options allow needed body movement, wobbles and wiggles, while children work on assignments. Students can be given choices of where and how to sit to prepare for learning. With this support, students can be more engaged with other students and with learning. Meeting their physical needs can make them more successful. Flex Space Comfy floor seating will be available in our reading center along with existing seating to invite students alternatives during extended independent reading time. This seating can invite more reluctant students to read in an alternate environment to desks. Students can find what works for them, but the options have to be available.
I believe by donating to support my students, it will make it possible for them to be less disruptive to their fellow learners and more engaged in learning.
Given alternative seating and choice will improve their ability to focus and attend. Additionally, appropriate and comfortable seating will fulfill students' need for movement. Choice will empower learners to not only select their physical surroundings but also to make appropriate choices to further their academics and in turn increase their ability to advance academically.
