Wiggle and Twist: Opportunities to Control Learning
My students need an environment where they feel comfortable to take learning into their own hands. They need lap desks, rugs, an easel, and wobble chairs.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"I know that word! We learned the pattern!" is probably one of the best phrases uttered in my classroom last year from a low achieving student. But, that student was the norm, as many of the students I work with are below grade-level, many at early first and late kindergarten levels.
Though the low-achieving students struggle, daily they amaze me with their perseverance and their "a-ha" moments bring a smile to my face.
The children I work with come from inner-city neighborhoods and all students are given a free breakfast and lunch. The students are hard-working and determined to try their hardest and be pushed out of their comfort zones.
My Project
Not all students have the same background, goals, likes or dislikes. With that being said, not all students are able to learn in the same environment.
Throughout the last few years, I have learned that many of my students would rather stand, lay on the floor, use a blanket or pillow while independently learning.
The items that I am requesting for use in my class, will allow students to choose the best spot for them to learn. The carpets will give students a soft place to sit or lay while working. Lap desks give students a larger work area when compared to a clip board. Lastly, the wobble chairs will give students the opportunity to sit at their desk, while continuing to move, for when the floor just isn't the right place, but they need to get their wiggles out.
The easel will be used in a couple different ways. First, students will be able to stand at the easel and use the white board in order to practice sight words, math problems, or cursive throughout the year. Next, when we work together as a class, or as a small group, students will be able to see the anchor chart being worked on much easier and be able to reference it at their height.
