My Students

I teach in a Resource Room for Special Education students who have a variety of needs and challenges. They love to learn and require unique supports to nurture and develop their emotional and behavioral health in order to be prepared to learn academically.

They often have environmental distractions that they bring into the classroom setting, so they struggle to find methods to maintain calmness and settle their bodies in order to be able to learn.

Some simple tools that provide them support can make a significant difference in their attention span and ability to learn.

My Project

Tools such as therapy balls and bean bags allow the distracted and active learners to wiggle and be comfortable while still focusing on their learning! They use them throughout the school day while reading, completing work or even engaged in a game at the table.

The easel allows me to work with them while maintaining eye level and not standing over them, which does not bring connection.

I do not want to stand over them, I want to be engaged with them.

Many of these tools and items create a more nurturing and comforting environment that allow a special needs student to feel safe, while being themselves and accessing learning.
