We are in a Title I school in a low income school district. Most students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our community is very culturally diverse and students come to school with a wide variety of experiences and abilities. Many students are English language learners.
My class is made up of fantastic first graders who love learning and working together as readers, writers, and mathematicians.
Our school mascot is the Tiger. We "Roar with Pride" for all the new things we learn each day and how we are able to show that we are experts at many, many things.
My Project
First graders work hard and are busy every day! All this learning takes a lot of focus, but since they are only 6 and 7 years old they also need to use their energy.
First grade learners need ways to safely bounce, wiggle, and move their bodies while also accomplishing their academic goals.
Our project includes wiggle seats, chair bands, and a weighted lap pad. The wiggle seats help students move and provide the type of flexible seating that can be brought from chair to floor - wherever a student will do their best learning. The chair bands safely attach to small chairs and will allow students to bounce their feet while sitting. This type of chair band also attaches in a safe way that makes it more difficult for little hands to remove. Other types of learners need a sensory tool that provides them deep pressure touch to help them focus. The weighted lap pad will be used for students who may need that type of sensory tool to help them do their best work.
