Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach some of the most amazing kids in the urban core of Kansas City, KS. We are an International Baccalaureate school that holds students accountable to very high standards. About 78% of our students receive free or reduced-cost breakfasts and lunches. Despite difficult circumstances that many of our students face every day, they persevere and thrive. In fact, seven of the last eight years, we have been ranked #1 by US News and World Report in the state of Kansas; and, every year we have a 98% or higher graduation rate. With the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, our school, like most others around the country and world, have moved on to online learning. While this is a viable option to continue meaningful curriculum so that our students are prepared for future educational opportunities, it has caused stress and hardship for some students and their families due to their lack of Wi-Fi access. I would like to provide students with Wi-Fi hotspots that they can use in order to continue their studies and submit the necessary work to complete their courses.
My Project
By providing Wi-Fi hotspots to our students most in need, we can provide equitable opportunities for all students to be successful in their online educational studies. These hotspots give students the capability to participate in video conferencing and online classroom chats and discussions that will enhance their education, keep them up to date with current events and requirements of their classes, and most importantly, give them an outlet to stay connected with their teachers and classmates so that they don't feel lonely and isolated. While I am certain that continuing students' education in a meaningful way is very important, I know that maintaining their mental health is just as important. Having access to Wi-Fi will give kids the connection they need to still have that human contact that is so valuable to our emotional stability and well-being.
