Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you first learned that the earth rotated on an axis. Do you remember jumping up and wondering if you would land in a different state or country? My students know this won't happen but they're still trying to wrap their head around the concept.
My students attend a small (approximately six hundred students), high achieving charter school in Southern California.
They are high school students enrolled in an Advanced Placement Environmental Science Course.
My students are from an urban area and most of them are from families with a low socioeconomic status. They are Title I students who are very motivated to succeed.
My Project
A Coriolis kit would allow my students to simulate the effect of the Earth's rotation on winds, ocean currents and material objects. This is a skill they need to be able to demonstrate their mastery of on their AP exam. My students have a difficult time understanding this concept because it is is something they need to experience through hands-on learning.
Not only will this project allow my students to demonstrate mastery of necessary skill, it will also tie in other related skills and concepts.
Specifically, my students will be able to understand convection currents and how it directly relates to the climate of biomes. They will also be able to model cyclonic storms such as hurricanes, cyclones and tornado's. This is extremely important because it is something they are unfamiliar with since they are from Southern California.
