My Students
My kids are a great bunch and sometimes I wonder how much more amazing they would be if they had some nutritional food in their system. Most of them don't eat anything even remotely healthy and I feel that there chances of learning might be advanced by healthy snacks...and bribery. :-)
Mostly kids from low income areas of the Bronx.
Some come from as far as BK but that's a zoning issue. My kids are hip high schoolers who talk about books, argue about classic situations, are big in class but shy against upper class man (they're freshman) They are always looking for reasoning to eat some junk and my first period starts so early I let them eat food in class as long as its not insanely loud.
My Project
A couple of months ago one of my student made the off hand comment she was hungry. I asked if she had eaten breakfast and she said no she hadn't had the time. I recalled seeing her with chips or some other fattening food and recalled this past summer when I did a nutritional cleanse how much better I felt daily. I wanted to start bringing in cheese sticks, fruit slices...water bottles...small sandwiches for them...but then I realized...where I am going to put this stuff. The small fridge will be used to store healthy snacks for kids who haven't eaten and sometimes rewards. The sticker is just something I bought before and they liked...pardon the pun...but I seem to have lost.
I have the feeling my class has a home away from home vibe.
My kids this year are kind of encouraging me that the feeling is mutual. Hopefully my endeavors not only make the environment more welcoming and pleasant but also allow students to physically feel how nutrition can play a role in their daily educational circumstance.
