Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is my first year teaching in the New York public school system. I am a self-contained Kindergarten teacher in a busy Queens school. I will have between 20 and 25 children in my class come September. My classroom was used as office space last year so therefore I had/have very little in the way of manipulatives or materials for a dramatic play area. I have a kitchen sink and counter for the children to play with but nothing in the way of play food, appliances, dishes, cups, pots, pans etc. I believe my class needs these items to help foster their socialization and communication skills. Many or almost all of the children that came to my class this year did not attend Pre-K, therefore they did not know how to socialize and get along well with one another. I feel that pretend play, particularly in a house-keeping setting, will help improve my children's social and emotional skills. Skill building elements such as reading and writing can also be incorporated into dramatic play. The children, with the right materials, can play restaurant, toy store etc. They can write lists, recipes and menus. Dramatic play can also enhance the children's vocabulary skills through communication with their peers in this setting. I believe that having attractive, age-appropriate and child-sized materials such as play food, appliances, dishes, cups etc. will reinforce my class' social, emotional and vocabulary skills.
