See what Mrs. Houston is requestingMy students need to be able to see clear laminated info during workshop on white dry erase boards, projected worksheets on a wall screen, and where they live on a Map.

Can you imagine what it would be like to not know that people live in other places around the world than on your street or in your neighborhood? My students do not understand this concept, they only know what they see on the street, for we do not have a map in our classroom.
I am so lucky to have 18 brilliant 6 and 7 year old students.
They love to learn and are passionate about (almost) everything I teach. My first graders are very visual little people. They love to SEE everything and do not do well when I ask them to pretend that the picture I've drawn on the board looks like the picture in their workbook. My students get frustrated and upset when I ask them to pretend they know where Maryland is located in the USA. It is hard to pretend to know where something is when you don't even know what the USA looks like. My first graders attend a fantastic school filled with teachers and staff who want to teach them everything they can about the world. Unfortunately, our wonderful school does not have the funds to supply the items my students need to be able to "see," such as a projector screen, chart paper, math enrichment activities, etc. As a young first year teacher, I do not have the funds to supply these items for my visual students either.
One of my biggest struggles in the classroom is guiding my students through a worksheet. I do not have the supplies to project a copy of the worksheet onto the board, so I must rely on going to each student's desk to show them what they need to do. This system does not work and often results in many upset and confused little students. If I had a projector screen I could use the projector to show my students so many different things. I could project their Phonics worksheet on the board and we could complete it as a class. If I had a map to hang on the wall, I could show my students where Mickey Mouse lives. If I had chart paper and white board paper, I would never have to ask my students to read a sentence written on 4 pieces of blue scrap paper taped together. If I had individual math enrichment activities, my students could practice their newly learned skills at their desks in their free time. My students would never have to struggle to "see" what I am trying to teach them!
Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn in the same kind of environment.
My little students should know what a map is and not have to rely on their teacher's poor artistic skills as she attempts to draw one on the board. Please give my students the gift of SIGHT, so they no longer have to imagine concepts they've never seen. I believe that my students should reserve their mind power to imagine wonderful stories or what it would be like to be the President of the United States
