My English 10 students are phenomenal: creative, compassionate, and resilient. Many of them are multilingual, hardworking, and impressively adept at navigating the various demands that home, work, and school place upon them. They strive to be successful despite hardships, and our staff works hard to ensure that school is a place that is safe, enjoyable, and inspirational for them.
In order to foster their love of and skills in Language Arts, it is essential that these young adults are able to access literature that is engaging, relevant to their lives, and reflective of their cultural identities and experiences.
Unfortunately, because of funding challenges, most of our language arts novels are significantly dated and reflect an Anglo-centric audience that does not represent or relate to our students' lives.
It is my hope that in obtaining and using a class set of the novel Poet X, my students will have the opportunity to interact with a text that is timely, that is highly engaging and accessible for struggling readers, and that reflects a BIPOC experience that may more closely resemble their experiences than what we are currently able to offer.
