My Students
My students are curious, smart, and dedicated. Every day, they come to class prepared to participate and eager to engage in rigorous academic learning. My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 50% of my students receiving free lunch. The students who attend my school speak a number of different languages including Arabic, Amharic, Tagalog, and Spanish. Many of my students are English Language Learners. I serve 25 students in my classroom. Of these 25 students, half are English language learners.
My Project
With our District's announcement to start the year learning online, I know that it is vital I find meaningful ways to engage students in distance learning. I am vetting online tools and to support students and families with at distance learning. One primary focus has been on finding tools that hold students accountable for completing their required daily reading. Whooo's Reading is an online program that I am excited to use with my class. This online program allows teachers to monitor students independent reading via online reading logs and comprehension quizzes.
Unlike tradition online book quizzes, Whooo's Reading asks students comprehension questions that require them to sight evidence from the text enhancing their comprehension of the books they are reading.
Traditional programs use multiple choice, asking students to recall basic information. This level of understanding shows a shallow depth of knowledge. Whooo's Reading requires students to engage with a deeper level thinking in regard to what they are reading. It also requires students to write about what they are reading, giving them the opportunity to enhance their written explanations.
Critical research shows that one way to improve student learning is via ongoing, meaningful feedback. The Whooo's Reading program is also a great way to give students feedback related to their grammar, spelling, organization, and other writing traits. The feedback can be submitted manually by teachers to allow students to monitor their own learning.
