Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Recently, my coworker told me how a kindergartner explained to her that you can layer crayon to make your artwork look more detailed. She used the same hand gestures to explain layering to her teacher that I had used to explain layering to her class. This retelling is precious to me because it shows how quickly a child can absorb a lesson when they are truly engaged in learning. Many of my students are behind where they could and should be when it comes to fine motor skills and art comprehension. I have fifth graders who do not know how to hold scissors. I have third graders who have never heard of any famous artist. Art experience also increases academic comprehension.

I am the very first art teacher at the elementary level at our school.

I am overwhelmed with joy every 45 minutes. My students are excited everyday to get their hands dirty and play to learn. Given the appropriate tools I anticipate that they will meet and exceed my goals for them and their goals for themselves. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but it is a labor of love.

My Project

The first day of a new project I dedicate to reading an inspirational or exciting children's book to my K-5 students and introducing the new art project. We touch on several different mediums throughout the year. Right now I borrow every book from the public library because our school does not have a library of its own.

I would like my students to have access to books in my classroom.

I have opened this donors-choose project to hopefully achieve a classroom library of my favorite books as well as How to Draw books for my students to be able to enjoy.
