Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Why do I need to learn how to read? This is a phrase I never hear. My classes of ESL students are only too aware of the necessity to read in English. The question I hear the most is, 'How can I practice more?' E-readers can store thousands of titles and can easily be updated as new material is available.
My students are eager, bright, and hardworking.
They speak dozens of languages from Spanish to Tagalog, Chinese to Arabic. Some students enter my class having never before been in school, while other students came from exclusive private schools. All my students are English language learners, and they benefit from repeated and frequent exposure to English material. Whether it is written, spoken, or read, students learn something every time they sit down with a text.
While some students have an easier time acquiring the language, every one of them is a hard worker. They drive themselves to extraordinary lengths to met the challenges of learning a new language.
My Project
The Kindle Fire can be synchronized with one online account, so that I can purchase books and have these purchases available on multiple devices. Further, these class sets will take up little space, and will be in new condition years from now. This will allow me to easily obtain class sets of books. The Kindle Fire also allows me to use books that have audio tracks. This gives students the ability to read independently since they can tap on a word to hear its pronunciation and dictionary definition. The touch screen acts instinctually with natural motion. Students can quickly learn how to navigate this device to be able to make choices about free reading. Instead of having to go to a library, they can go to the device and browse numerous titles.
The e-reader does not eliminate the need for a physical library, but it does supplement it. Some students prefer physical pages, but others feel more comfortable reading from a digital device. The e-reader gives students choices.
Your support of education is priceless to me.
But it is more precious to my students. They are the ones whose lives will be changed by your small contributions. On behalf of them, will you help move us forward?
