Whoa! Did You See That?!- Making Science Come to Life
My students need an LCD projector to view earth science video clips and present the results of their scientific investigations.

My Students
When trying to make sense of hurricanes during an Earth Science class, a student asked, "Can a hurricane happen if you put a wind turbine in Lake Michigan?" Sounds crazy, right? Imagine learning earth science when the only natural phenomena you have to reference are within 30 miles of your home.
I teach earth science to sophomore students at an urban public high school in which 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
These students travel across the city to attend a high school that values leadership, cooperative learning, and college preparation. Many of my students will be the first in their family to attend college and in some cases, the first to graduate high school. While the students have a strong drive to succeed, they lack the resources and experiences to become fully engaged in their studies.
My Project
My students are extremely inquisitive about the earth science topics we cover but their understanding is limited to their personal experiences, teacher lectures, and the analysis of diagrams and text. The students need to be able to have experiences like witnessing the onset of a hurricane and the destruction of massive flooding, even if these experiences are through the lens of a video camera. A classroom LCD projector would give poverty-stricken students the chance to explore different locations and features of the Earth on a daily basis through the use of short video clips. While the daily video clip is certain to aid the students’ understanding of the course content material, my goal is that the videos will also inspire the students to be more alert to the current scientific events happening everyday around the world.
In addition to fostering a sense of awareness for current events in the field of earth science, your donation will allow students to present and defend the results of their scientific investigations.
By providing students with the opportunity to view firsthand videos of natural phenomena and to formally present their scientific investigations, your donation could inspire students to pursue post-secondary education in fields ranging from science and engineering to law and policy-making.
