My students need fun, interesting, and level appropriate books in order to help them learn to communicate in Spanish effectively and these books will really help them meet that goal.

My Students

It is so much fun to watch the huge grins on my students' faces when they begin to be able to put words and phrases together and speak in another language. These are great kids from lower to middle class families who are taking language classes to help them get into college. They are respectful, hard-working, and dedicated students who can go as far as a teacher will let them. I can see their potential and would like to help them reach for the stars.

My Project

There is a Facebook page for Spanish teachers in the United States and many of our nation's best and most prominent Spanish instructors are on that site. One happy day, I found that site and I had not been on for more than a few weeks before I realized that the greatest key to teaching a student how to actually communicate in another language is through stories. Language, not surprisingly, is learned through context, not through vocabulary lists and grammar exercises. Stories make the language come alive and effortlessly teach students how to successfully form sentences and create recognizable language patterns.

Fortunately, for my students, there is a wide range of level appropriate books for language learners available right now.

I need help building a reading library for my students so that I can begin to teach them the value of reading in acquiring a second language. We will, of course, continue to speak and write, sing and play in Spanish, but a reading library would be an extremely effective tool in helping my students acquire the skills necessary to walk out of our Spanish classroom actually speaking Spanish. Imagine that!
