My students come from diverse backgrounds. Mine is a 100% free/reduced-price lunch school, and more than three-quarters of the students come from low-income, high poverty backgrounds.
School is often the safe place for students to come for a warm meal, a friendly smile, and positive attention in their lives.
When my students are at school, they love to learn, explore, and teach each other.
With limited resources in our district, we are often unable to purchase items that students need to maximize their learning, explore the world around them, and challenge themselves.
Many of the students that come to my classroom know little to nothing about historical figures, places, and events. Some of my students do not know about current events, places, and people as well.
With the who was, what is/was, and where is series, my students have a resource that they are able to use to explore historical and current figures, places, and events through time that they may not have been exposed to yet.
These books will be utilized not only for my students to learn more about the person, place, or event on their own time but to help them brainstorm, construct, and complete essays, activities, and various projects throughout the year in reading, writing, science, and history.
